The instructional design —or learning design— phase involves the process of explicitly designing the learning content, activities, support and methods to enable the learner to meet the specific learning goals. This phase is informed by the (scaffolded) learning outcomes, the assessment strategy and the curriculum map. It is about moulding the full instructor-learner experience.

The result of this phase of the educational design process is typically represented by course/module manuals, describing exactly what the learner will do, when, how and where.
