Teachers, or instructors, are not educational designers, and they don’t need to be. But an external educational designer can never be the owner of the educational program; the team executing it is. And in order to execute a new or redesigned educational program with confidence, they do need to understand all the decisions that were made in the design process. They also need to be skilled at (new) ways of teaching, supporting and assessing the learners. Teacher training is not so much a phase in the educational design process that follows after all has been designed, as it is an activity that runs throughout the entire educational design process. Preferably as training-on-the-job, as they (re)design the program themselves, but it’s also possible to organise separate training sessions for lectures on the topic of (the) educational design (phase).
